Tiny House Women Took Their Eco-Friendly Business On The Road

Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen visits with China Rose and AJ Zamora and gets the complete tour of their unique gypsy wagon inspired tiny home. It’s a live-work space where they also run their business, China Rose Wellness.

One of the best space saving features I’ve seen in a tiny house is their floating bed. It lowers from the ceiling via a tow winch motor, pulleys, and cables. The slanted walls help support the bed when its lowered at night for sleep.

In the bathroom is a composting toilet, laundry machine, bathtub and a sink that shares the tubs faucet and folds into bathtub space when the tub is not in use. Great space saving idea!

In their previous they developed some health issues due to mold, so in their tiny home’s construction they used tons of natural materials and low VOC sealants.

Box Truck Film Coming Soon

In a recent how-to video Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen and Alex Eaves give an informal peek at the box truck they are building for the movie, Box Truck Film.

The film is about reuse, and Deek & Alex have teamed-up to convert a used box truck into a tiny house & mobile reuse education center. They’ve already funded a good portion of the film, but it’s not too late to participate in their crowdfunding campaign.

Below Deek & Alex explain the project and how you can help. Photos via Alex Eave’s YouTube Channel.

Deek Tours the Fiero by the Small Dwelling Company

Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen tours the Fiero, a new tiny house design by The Small Dwelling Company while at the Tiny House Jamboree.

It has a lower level bed which is hidden behind sliding barn doors and a sleeping loft accessed by a staircase. It has a fully functional kitchen, laundry, and large bathroom. It even has a roof deck accessed by an exterior ladder.

So… You Want to Build a Tiny House?

So… if you want to learn how to build a tiny house, you should really take a hands-on workshop. Books and videos are great, but when you get your hands dirty and actually build stuff… you’ll learn tons.

Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen does some of the best workshops out there. Deek has a couple workshops scheduled right now:

  • California – JOSHUA TREE Tiny House Workshop 2018 – March 23-24-25- 2018
  • Stoughton/Boston, MA Green Building/Tiny House Workshop – Feb 17th/18th

The best part of Deek’s workshops is that it’s all about getting some hands-on experience. You won’t find yourself stuck in a conference room watching powerpoint presentations about tiny houses when you learn with Deek. You’ll find yourself out on a job site building stuff.

Tour of Bear’s Tiny Homes

Most tiny homes you see out there these days are built on 24-foot trailer or larger. This one – the Blue Bell – is just 20-feet but packs tons of function into this relatively small space.

I especially love the built-ins and appliances tucked into the cabinetry. The stairs and loft configuration also allows for maximum headroom in the bathroom & Kitchen below and the loft above.

NYC Loft Inspired Tiny House

Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen toured many tiny houses at the Tiny House Jamboree recently. In this episode checks-out the tiny home of Sheena and Ross Henry which was inspired by a New York City industrial loft/flat. It’s fully off-grid, features a spacious sleep loft, storage loft, and has an amazing bathroom.

The Glass House & Upcoming Workshop with Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen

As for the build you’re seeing, this is something I designed and that me and my crew built in a hair over four days on a pretty extreme budget, and while off-grid in the woods. This seasonal cabin (which could be made a year round place with a little insulation and roof swap-out- easily) was not intended for full time living, but could easily be taken to that level with very little in time and money.” – Derek ‘Deek’ Diedricksen
