Off the Grid Living in London in a Boat Made from Scrap

Here’s a peek into what it’s like to live off-grid in London. With sweat equity and resourceful scavenging this narrow boat owner has carved out a low cost way of living in one of the most expensive cities in the world. This video was brought to you by the folks at Off-Grid.net, where you can learn how to free yourself.

“Gypsy” Vans by Roth

Wally and Victoria Roth of Bend, Oregon have experience in building exquisite carousel horses, cabinets, boat building and yacht restoration, but their designs really come to life in their re-creations of their Romani “Gypsy” Caravans. Their goal for the custom design is to come as close as possible to the original look and feel of the caravans that can still be found around England today. The Romani were a group of people who arrived in Europe from northern India around the 14th century. Their travels in wagons much like the Roth’s took them across the continent to Great Britain and even into North America, Brazil and Australia.” – Kent

Beetle’s House

This tiny house designed by Japanese architect Terunobu Fujimori and is now on display at the V&A Museum in London.

It’s part of an exhibit called 1:1 – Architects Build Small Spaces. Nineteen architects were invited to submit proposals and seven were selected to be built at full-scale.

Beetle’s house is designed to host an English variation of the Japanese Tea Ceremony. The entry is through the floor via a ladder. Read more about Beetle’s House at Design Boom.

Tiny House in a Barn

Nick Weston, the author or The Treehouse Diaries: How to Live Wild in the Woods, has moved out of his treehouse in England and has setup a new humble living space inside an old barn. By comparison he’s now living a modern life with electricity, a gas stove, and running water (just outside from a garden faucet). It might not be the lap of luxury but Nick likes it just fine and as he says, “its as cheap as chips”. Read more about Nick’s tiny house in a barn.

Old English Ruins

One of my regular readers ran across this fantastic photo album of old English ruins. Many of the photos are of very large structures but tucked here and there are some incredible tiny huts and cottages. Thanks again Dav!
